A regional consultation meet heard that women are likely to be more affected by climate change because of the gender division of responsibilities and roles in the Pacific and other societies in the world.
This is according to Development Alternatives with Women for a New Era (DAWN) training co-ordinator, Zo Randriamaro, who addressed the meeting, as reported by Fiji Times Online. According to Fiji Times Online, the regional consultation meet on "Strengthening Policy Analysis and Advocacy on Gender, Economic and Climate Justice in the Pacific" was told by Ms. Randriamaro that, "Women are responsible for lots of things and this will become more difficult to do because of climate change". "Not only on how women will be affected by climate change but also about how the...

BY PACIFIC REGIONAL ENVIRONMENT PROGRAMME
Monday 6 September 2010, Madang - Environment Ministers, Officials, donors and government and non-government partners from in and around the Pacific have gathered in Madang, Papua New Guinea, for the twenty-first annual meeting of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme, being held from 6 to 10 September.
Speaking at the opening of the Meeting, PNG's Minister for Environment and Conservation, the Honourable Mr Benny Allen, reminded delegates of their important role in addressing environment as a key pillar of sustainable development. "It is unlikely that the development trends of the past two decades will change in the near future," he said. "And that means we will need to address growing environmental contamination and destruction." The Minister listed land use practices, waste management, rising populations and urban growth, climate change and terrestrial and marine...

Press Release - A new draft three-year action plan has been developed outlining activities, responsibilities and targets that seek to promote and strengthen the wise use and conservation of wetlands in the region.
The new Regional Wetlands Action Plan for the Pacific Islands follows on from the original Regional Wetlands Action Plan endorsed by members of the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) in 1999. The new action plan covers the period 2011-2013 and is expected to be finalised this month. The three-year action plan was developed during a regional workshop which was held in August in Noumea, New Caledonia to review the implementation of the 1999 Regional Wetlands Action Plan. It preceded a series of training sessions on implementation processes of the Ramsar...

BY SECRETARIAT OF THE PACIFIC COMMUNITY
Tuesday, 31 August 2010 - The 11th Triennial Conference of Pacific Women held at SPC headquarters in Noumea from 16-20 August 2010 called for stronger regional multi-sectoral processes and mechanisms to accelerate the achievement of equality between women and men in the Pacific Island region.
The call came in response to a regional report and presentation by SPC showing that while there are good examples of progress, overall implementation of commitments to gender equality has been slow in many areas over the past 15 years, and that national and regional institutions for gender equality continue to face significant challenges in their work. Among the challenges are low staffing levels, limited resources and insufficient space and opportunity to contribute to and influence policy across the wide range of multi-sectoral development work going on in the region. ...
