BY PACIFIC REGIONAL ENVIRONMENT PROGRAMME
Press Release - A new draft three-year action plan has been developed outlining activities, responsibilities and targets that seek to promote and strengthen the wise use and conservation of wetlands in the region.
The new Regional Wetlands Action Plan for the Pacific Islands follows on from the original Regional Wetlands Action Plan endorsed by members of the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) in 1999. The new action plan covers the period 2011-2013 and is expected to be finalised this month. The three-year action plan was developed during a regional workshop which was held in August in Noumea, New Caledonia to review the implementation of the 1999 Regional Wetlands Action Plan. It preceded a series of training sessions on implementation processes of the Ramsar...

Transparency Solomon Islands (TSI) supports the call by the Chairperson of the Leadership Code Commission (LCC), Emmanuel Kouhota, that leaders, particularly Members of Parliament, must avoid putting themselves in situations that give rise to conflicts of interest.
"Where a political leader is in such a position, it will be interpreted negatively by the general public as a compromise to the principles of good leadership," TSI said in a statement. "As stated by the chairperson of the LCC, a conflict of interest situation may arise in cases where the public perceives it as such, regardless of whether it is actual or not." Bodo Detke as Minister of Forests and several other appointments in the new Cabinet. Other forthcoming...

The football fraternity and football fans in Solomon Islands received their best news yet this year with the announcement that football is among the sports approved for the 2011 Pacific Games.
The announcement was made yesterday by the National Olympic Committee of Solomon Islands (NOCSI) and comes after an uneasy time for football in Solomon Islands as it faced uncertainty about its place in the next edition of the Pacific Games. Earlier this year NOCSI announced that football is not one of the sports automatically selected for the Pacific Games. Instead, NOCSI said football will have to go through a justification process. As the custodian of football in the country the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) was put under immense pressure to convince the...

Miss Solomon Islands 2009, Rabobo Toma, together with the Henderson Hammer Heads Rugby club, following their Charity Fundraiser, handed over kitchen, gardening and various essentials to the Christian Care Centre on Wednesday this week.
