WTO Workshop for FIC Officials

Press Release - 11th March 2010 - The move towards strengthening regional capacity in World Trade Organization (WTO) General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) and services negotiations took another step forward with the conclusion of a three-day workshop held in Nadi, Fiji from 8 -10 March 2010.

The workshop, jointly organized by the WTO and the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, was attended by trade officials from the Forum Island Countries (FICs). It was conducted by WTO Secretariat trade in services experts with regional speakers invited from the University of the South Pacific and Institute of International Trade at the University of Adelaide, Australia. PM Happy With Public Support for TRC

Prime Minister Dr Derek Sikua says that he is pleased with the public support and progress made by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, TRC.

Dr Sikua says that following the landmark public hearings into sufferings endured during the ethnic violence that gripped the country for five years. Dr Sikua joined other senior statesmen on the first day of the hearings on Tuesday to listen to testimonies of the pain that victims have endured during the violent years from 1998 to 2003. Meteorological Service Monitors Tropical Lows

The Solomon Islands Meteorological Service continues to issue special weather advises for Temotu and Rennell Bellona Provinces due to two low pressure systems.

Meteorological Service Monitors Tropical Lows Director of Meteorology, David Hiriasia, says the low pressure systems are situated north of Vanuatu, close to the Vanikoro Islands of Temotu Province, while the second one is situated close to American Samoa. Mr Hiriasia however says his office is monitoring the low system close to Vanikoro because the other is far away from the Solomon Islands. He says the system near Vanikoro is expected to move southwest towards Rennell and Bellona Province with prediction of rough seas and strong winds. Timber Development and Marketing Authority Bill Withdrawn

Parliament has withdrawn the Timber Development and Marketing Authority Bill.

Timber Development and Marketing Authority Bill Withdrawn The Timber Development and Marketing Authority Bill was intended to establish an authority to facilitate buying and selling of timber harvested by local communities and to market timber at international prices. It was also to serve as an advisory body for communities in areas of forest plantation management, best timber harvesting practices and timber export specifications. Leadership Code Commission Fines Leaders

The Leadership Code Commission has fined more than 400 leaders for failing to give statements of their assets and financial interests to the Commission as required under the Leadership Code Act 1999.

Chairman of the Leadership Code Commission Emmanuel Kouhota says the Commission has imposed a penalty of 100 dollars each. Mr Kouhota says in October and November last year, the Commission sent out more than 800 declaration forms for leaders to fill in and declare their assets and financial interests to the Commission. But he says only about 400 leaders returned the forms to the Commission in time.
