A combination of unforeseen events in the Solomon Islands including ill health and leave of a number of doctors and two senior surgeons at the National Referral Hospital has left the Solomon Islands down to a single surgeon over the December/January period with growing need for emergency surgery.
In response to a request, the NGO and charity "Doctors Assisting In Solomon Islands" (DAISI) is sending a team of 8 volunteer surgeons, and three volunteer anaesthetists to Gizo hospital, in the Western province to volunteer from Monday 16th January until Sunday 29th January 2017. Patients with surgical conditions simply need to turn up during these time period for assessment and surgery.
Types of surgery performed include plastics reconstruction for burns contractures, hand/tendon injuries, hernia, rectal bleeding, haemorrhoids, anal conditions, bowel cancer, thyroid goitre, and key hole surgery for gallstones (only available in Solomon Islands at Gizo hospital). Gastroscopy and colonoscopy is also available to investigate gastrointestinal bleeding.
