The Japanese mining company, Sumitomo Metal Mining Co, Ltd, SMM, has donated $700,000 to the Solomon Islands Government Disaster Relief effort.

SMM’s assistance is in response to a government appeals for disaster assistance as a result of flash flooding in parts of Solomon Islands, including Honiara.

Yoritoshi Ochi, the Managing Director of SMM Solomon Ltd, says the company sends its deepest sympathy to the families and people who have been affected and affirm moral support and join all efforts to supporting the SIG and other stake holders in redressing the effects of this national calamity.

He adds, tragedies like the one Solomon Islands witnessed over recent days have no national boundaries.

Therefore, in times like this, people of different races, ethnicity, creed, political affiliation or nationality must come together to address these tragedies for the good of all.

Meanwhile, the Director of the National Disaster Management Office, Loti Yates and the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Environment, Climate-Change and Disaster Management & Meteorology, Dr. Melchior Mataki, received the donation from Kyoichi Ito of SMM at the NDMO Headquarters at Vavaya Ridge, Honiara.

Receiving the donation Mr Mataki assures SMM and its subsidiary in Solomon Islands, the donation will be going straight to helping victims of the April 3rd floods.

SMM Solomon Ltd, a subsidiary of Sumitomo Metal Mining Co, Ltd has been carrying out nickel prospecting in Choiseul and Isabel Provinces since 2006.
