Promoting women into leadership does not mean women are taking over men's role.
This was the response of Ms. Val Stanley, UNIFEM facilitator during a media forum organized by UNIFEM yesterday. The Media Forum on 'The Role of Women in Maintaining Political Balance' was aimed at highlighting the importance of women in politics. With a significant number of women standing for the 2010 National Election, the event was organized to provide an opportunity to hear how women in politics can make a real difference. The Director General of the United Nation Educational Social and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Ms Irina Bokova has arrived for a two day visit to Solomon Islands.
Ms Bokova is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Dr Derek Sikua and Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade William Haomae shortly after her arrival. She will also hold talks with Government Ministers, Permanent Secretaries and Commissioners that are charged with UNESCO portfolios. Today, Ms Bokova will be flown over to visit the Marovo Lagoon, in the Western Province, which is a UNESCO listed World Heritage site. She leaves Honiara this afternoon. During a three-day visit to the Solomon Islands, UNDP Deputy Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, Ms. Ligia Elizondo, met with key politicians in the country to discuss strategic national issues such as the upcoming elections, peace building, and the impact of climate change.
UNDP's work in capacity building is very important for the future of the country, said Dr. Derek Sikua during a meeting with Ms. Elizondo yesterday, it is "empowering our people to take control of their own lives, and not rely on others." The Prime Minister particularly mentioned UNDP/UNCDF's Provincial Governance Strengthening Programme, which is active in all nine provinces. The five-year programme builds capacity in public expenditure management in provincial governments, and is funded by the European Union, RAMSI/AusAID, UNDP and UNCDF. Ms. Elizondo also visited...

It looked scary when villagers dressed like traditional warriors rushed towards Ms. Ligia Elizondo with spears and bush knives, but it was only part of Horobau's heartily welcome to UNDP's Deputy Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific.
The threatening introduction soon evolved into a welcome ceremony to honor the prominent guest from New York. Hundreds of villagers from Horobau and nearby villages had gathered to attend her visit. Ms. Ligia Elizondo visited Horobau village in Aruligo (West Guadalcanal) Monday to inaugurate the village's new water supply system and to view results of the joint programme of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), AusAID and the Solomon Islands Government through National Disaster Management Office (NDMO). UNDP Deputy Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, Ms. Ligia Elizondo, is currently in the country on an official visit from 11-13 April.
She will meet with high ranking government officials, and visit a UNDP-AusAID supported local disaster recovery and mitigation project. During her meetings Ms. Elizondo will discuss important topics such as the parliamentary election in the Solomon Islands this summer; the hearings in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission addressing victims and perpetrators from the Tensions in the country between 1998 and 2003; and the impacts of climate change in the region.
